VETWAYS publishes journal article

PI Benbow, Ms. Xin Xie, and Co-PI Lee have published a peer-reviewed article in the Journal of Diversity in Higher Education focused on data from VETWAYS.

Entitled, “An exploratory quantitative study comparing student service member/veteran and civilian student characteristics and perspectives,” the article focuses on the similarities and differences between student service members/veterans and civilian students in four-year universities.

Results suggest that student service members/veterans are more often first-generation, physically and cognitive impaired, enrolled full-time, and have less financial stress than civilian students. Results also indicate that student service members/veterans feel less of a sense of belonging on campus and in their academic major programs than civilian students of the same age.

Findings indicate that students with military experience often have different experiences, characteristics, and perspectives—and therefore different support needs—than other adult learners.
